The Texas rule: you must be 19
Most states let Dashers start at 18. Texas is not one of them: DoorDash's own requirements page puts Texas in its 19-and-over group, and its FAQ states it flatly — Texas requires Dashers to be at least 19 years old. Uber Eats lands in the same place for car and scooter delivery: at least 19, with a valid driver's license and insurance in your name, and — for car delivery — at least one year of driving experience. Bicycle and on-foot delivery on Uber Eats starts at 18 with a government-issued ID.
Neither app asks the City of San Antonio for anything. Like rideshare, this is state-and-app territory: your license, your record, and the app's screening decide it.
What DoorDash asks for
DoorDash's requirements are the loosest in gig driving. A current, valid US government-issued ID; a Social Security number (used for the background check, which covers a national criminal check, an SSN trace, and a motor vehicle record check for vehicle Dashers); and, if you deliver by motorized vehicle, a valid driver's license, insurance, and registration. On the vehicle itself, DoorDash says there are no specific vehicle requirements — any car, any make, model, or year. Motorcycle, scooter, bike, and e-bike are allowed depending on location; bicycle Dashers need no license and no vehicle insurance.
Sign-up runs through the Dasher app in a few minutes, with identity verification and the background check as the final steps before activation. After your first dash, DoorDash sends an activation kit with a food warming bag and a Red Card. You must keep your own auto insurance at state minimums — DoorDash maintains coverage up to $1 million while you are on an active delivery, but the company is explicit that it does not replace your personal insurance.
What Uber Eats asks for
Uber's delivery requirements are a notch tighter. Car delivery: 19 or older, a 2-door or 4-door car, a valid license and vehicle insurance under your name, and one year of driving experience. Scooter delivery: 19 or older, license in your name, and a scooter of 50cc or less that travels no faster than 30 mph. Everyone passes a background screening with an SSN, uploads documents and a photo, and — per Uber's FAQ — activation generally takes from a few minutes to 48 hours once everything is in. Uber does not publish a model-year cutoff for delivery cars; its FAQ says most 2-door and 4-door vehicles qualify.
Already drive rideshare for Uber? Delivery can be added inside the Driver app through the Work Hub. Our rideshare guide covers the passenger side of Uber and Lyft in San Antonio — the two stack well, because food peaks and ride peaks rarely collide.
How DoorDash pay actually works
DoorDash pay has three parts: base pay, promotions, and 100% of customer tips — base pay never changes because of the tip. In the standard Earn per Offer mode, base pay runs from $2 to $10 or more per offer, set by estimated time, distance, and how desirable the offer is; the amount on the acceptance screen is the guaranteed minimum for that offer, and the final can be higher. Promotions stack on top: Peak Pay during busy periods, Challenges for completing a set number of deliveries, Delivery Streaks, and Boosts on individual offers.
The alternative is Earn by Time: a guaranteed hourly rate for active time — from accepting an offer until you complete it — plus tips. Waiting for an offer is not active time and is not paid, and DoorDash notes tips may be less frequent in by-time mode. Money lands by weekly direct deposit (deliveries Monday through Sunday, usually by Wednesday night), with daily cash-out available for a fee. DoorDash does not publish a San Antonio by-time rate, so any hourly figure someone quotes you for this city is not coming from DoorDash.
How Uber Eats pay works
Uber shows you the fare before you accept: the amount includes the base fare plus any upfront tip the customer added at checkout. Earnings are base fare plus promotions plus tips, and 100% of tips are yours. Cash-out runs through Instant Pay — up to six times a day for a fee — or the free weekly bank transfer. The practical difference from DoorDash: the upfront number on Uber Eats often already contains the tip, while DoorDash's acceptance screen guarantees a minimum and lets the final float higher. Experienced drivers in San Antonio run both apps and let the two offer screens compete.
The costs are yours — run your own number
Both apps hire independent contractors: no schedule, no minimum hours, and no vehicle costs covered. Fuel, tires, oil, depreciation, and the self-employment tax come out of whatever the apps pay, which is why the only honest pay figure is your own tracked one. Our San Antonio driver pay guide sets the gig numbers next to the official Bureau of Labor Statistics data for this metro — couriers average $19.58 an hour here as employees — and our tax guide covers the mileage records that protect your margin. Short version: deliver the dinner rush and the weekend, decline the $2 offers, and food delivery treats you fairly. Chase every ping at 2 p.m. on a Tuesday and it will not.
