The verified facts for 2026
From the San Antonio River Walk Association and Visit San Antonio: the 45th Annual Ford Holiday River Parade and Lighting Ceremony is Friday, November 27, 2026. The parade begins at 6:00 PM at the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts, with the televised lighting ceremony broadcast from the Arneson River Theatre at 7:05 PM. This year's theme is “Holiday Wishes Come True,” and the Witte Museum — celebrating its 100th birthday — serves as Grand Marshal.
The parade is also the official switch-on for the River Walk holiday lights: roughly 200,000 lights draped through the bald cypress trees along the downtown River Walk, lit from sundown to sunrise every night from November 27 through early January. Viewing the lights from the public walkways is free, and there is a free, first-come parade viewing area on the east side of the river between Pecan Street and Richmond Avenue. Reserved parade seating is ticketed — and tickets are non-refundable, which is one more reason riders plan their trips instead of driving themselves.
Why this night pays drivers differently
Most event nights spike once. Parade night stacks three demand waves: Black Friday retail trips through the afternoon, parade arrivals from about 4 PM as spectators claim viewing spots early, and the hard one — everybody leaving at once when the televised ceremony wraps and 200,000 lights come fully on. The post-parade wave is the biggest rideshare and taxi moment downtown all season, and it repeats in smaller form every evening through early January, because the lights themselves are the attraction.
Treat the whole lights season, not just parade night, as a downtown evening shift worth testing. If you also run deliveries, the same crowds keep restaurant and retail delivery demand up along the River Walk corridor — our holiday delivery season playbook covers how to mix the two.
- Afternoon: Black Friday shoppers — malls and retail corridors, per our Black Friday delivery demand guide
- 4–6 PM: parade arrivals heading downtown; drop-offs near the Tobin Center and Arneson River Theatre edges
- From ~7 PM: the lighting ceremony ends and the exit wave starts — stage outside the most congested river-level blocks
- Every night to early January: lights viewers, river barge riders, and restaurant trips along the downtown River Walk
Working downtown without sitting in it
River-level streets around the parade route are the slowest ground in the city that night. Work the edges: pickups a few blocks out from the river bend — near the Tobin Center on the north end or toward La Villita and Hemisfair on the south — put you close to the demand without putting you in the parade's own traffic. Riders walking two blocks to you is normal on event nights and faster for both of you.
Airport runs layer on top of all of it: parade weekend is also Thanksgiving weekend, one of the two biggest travel weekends of the year at SAT. Our Thanksgiving airport rush guide and SAT airport runs guide cover staging and the cell-phone lot routine. If a breakdown or a dead battery ends your night instead, local tow coverage matters — see the towing listings before you need them, not during surge.
The rest of the lights season
After parade night, the pattern settles: Friday and Saturday evenings are the strongest, the weeks before Christmas build steadily, and the nights between Christmas and New Year's stay busy with visiting family groups. Spurs home games at the Frost Bank Center add an east-side surge on game nights — the Spurs home-game playbook shows how those dates stack with the downtown lights crowds in December.
None of this guarantees earnings on any given night — demand varies with weather, game schedules, and how many drivers are out. What the calendar does guarantee is where people will be. Being positioned there, early, is the part you control.
Event nights are spikes; the holiday season also hires thousands of drivers for steadier seasonal routes. See San Antonio's CDL job listings while the seasonal posts are open.
